American Education Week
NEA's 88th annual American Education Week (AEW) spotlights the importance of providing every child in America with a high quality education from kindergarten through college, and the need for everyone to pitch in and help make public schools great.
The theme for AEW 2009, which will be celebrated November 15-21, is: "Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility." For more ideas, a toolkit, posters, checklists, templates and information, go to NEA's website.
NEA's creative ideas include celebrating Monday as Open House Day, Tuesday as Parents Day, Wednesday as Education Support Professional Day, Thursday as Community Leaders as Educators Day, and Friday as Substitute Educators Day.
MEA President Chris Galgay urges local associations to engage in this celebration as a great way to honor the work of educators and to build public awareness of all the good work we are doing.
"American Education Week is an opportunity to call upon Maine citizens to do their part in making public schools great for every child so that they can grow and achieve in the 21st Century," he says. "Local affiliates should work with their administrators to inform voters about our efforts to create great public schools for every Maine student."
