Lobby Days Are Here Again
Dear MEA Members,
As the Governor’s budget makes its way through the legislature, it is crucial educators have a say on what the future of education in Maine looks like especially how we are funded. Keeping that in mind, MEA is asking members to participate in “lobby days” in Augusta. This is the time to make your concerns heard, tell lawmakers what it’s really like to work in the classroom and what the proposed funding cuts truly mean to our students in Maine.
Lobby days will take place during February break on the 19th, 20th and 21st. We will meet at 9am each day at the locations listed below. MEA will provide a continental breakfast and lunch, reimbursement for mileage for one vehicle per association and one night for a hotel in Augusta if you travel for more than 90 miles one way to attend.
The MEA will also provide you with red shirts to wear that say “Pride in Public Schools” and MEA buttons to help identify you as a MEA member. We hope to send a strong message to lawmakers that educators stand united in the fight for our public schools.
We will begin each morning with a briefing by MEA Government Relations Director John Kosinski before heading to the State House. It is important to make sure that you tell your legislators your personal story of how this budget affects you and your students. We will then introduce you to your legislators, if you don’t already know them so you can convey your message. Below you will find a list of where to meet and how to RSVP for “lobby days.” Thank you for your willingness to fight for our profession as we defend education from more attacks.
